Soft vs telling lies

About Simon Ellis

Simon Ellis is a film director of short films that have different twists and plots involved in it, he first started off when the was just 16 years old, he shot his first film in black and white where he attended the school Coventry, Ellis began to take media more serious as he began to work with cameras and studied fine art. Later on in Simones career he developed into an amazing film director winning awards for his short films making eleven different short films to entertain the audience. ”Director Award for Best European Web Film for Choose a Different Ending and Who Killed Deon was ranked 'most awarded TV campaign in the world' by Campaign magazine in January 2012”.

Soft

This film was made in 2007 and it is  basically a this short film it highlights a boy who is being picked on by a group of hoodlums/teens and it ends up going to far as you can see in the film even though we do not know how long he has been bullied for we as the audience see that he looks to be bullied for a long time by the same group of people, the story starts off with a running camera scene recorded by a mobile phone which gives us the effect that a teenager is recording off their phone ,then we see a group of boys picking on this one boy in particular and they are beating him up leaving the boy weak and defenceless.

We then move on later from that scene to see the boys dad getting a pint of milk from the local corner shop then he is encountered by some hoodlums not knowing it was the same hoodlums that attacked his son ,they then get into a conflict and the teenagers then retaliate in a way that they made the dad feel very weak and defenceless as his son was, later on in the film as we see the dad and the son have a very slow and not so good relationship we see the group of teens end up outside the family house calling out the father ,as we go on the boy is wanting his father to go out and deal with the boys as he tells his dad that those were the exact same group of teens that attacked him on his way home from school ,we then learn that his dad is not what he makes out to be and we soon find out who’s in charge of the house hold.

Telling lies

This film was made in 2000 and it still has an effect on society now ,This short film starts off with a phone call from the man’s mother as she is checking on him ,we then go on to find out that the man had been drinking the following night and he has a hangover by the low tone of his voice even though we cannot see him we can tell by the convocation that later on leads up to it with his mother, he then tells his mum he had a break up with his girlfriend  which resorted to his best friend sleeping with his girlfriend ,we find out this when his girlfriend calls him angrily to tell him what she had done with no remorse because of the boy friend’s behaviour during the night out, we wonder why she is telling him this and why she is angry we find out when his girlfriend tells us the audience by saying that he had cheated first on her so she took it upon herself to get him back.

Soft is very similar to the film “Telling lies” not just because they are directed by the same man but because the genre is more like the same the relationship wise and drama wise . in the film we see that the boy and the dad do not really have a good relationship with each other I think the short film “soft” is a drama as we can see that there is a lot of tense moments in the film where we see the hoodlums that attacked the boy are in control over a grown man when we see the scene where he is being attacked and not doing anything about, this makes us the audience wonder what is he going to do to the hoodlums? is he going to get them back? For attacking him and how he will react and what will happen when we find out the same people that attacked the boy finds out that they also attacked his father, so this genre of film is classified as drama because there are fight scenes and also suspense.

Telling lies is very similar to the film “soft” because I think that the short film about “telling lies” is more of a relationship type of drama as we see in the film that its about a rocky style of a relationship  ad that there is no trust what so ever in the two couple as they had both cheated on each other on a night out, there is one scene where we see drama and a bit of betrayal when the girlfriend tells him that she cheated on him with his best friend , then we go on to see him right his best friend and ask him what happened ,he stars off the convocation with “is there something you have to tell me?” this causes dram and tension because we want to know if his friend will tell the truth ,again like in the film soft, this causes drama and leaving us in a state of mind thinking are they going to fight or even have an argument and this gives us the audience a sense of anxiousness in wanting to know what is going to happen.

I think overall both films were very interesting as it had different twist and turns in the film and the titles are more deceiving than you would first think , as you could probably by looking at the first opening scene when you see the boy in the film soft being bullied by a group of people but as alter on you see i the film everything becomes more clearer and you begin to open  your eyes more as you see the real meaning of the title of the film and who its really about, just like the film telling lies, we see like to different sides of the film we know that it’s about telling lies but what we don’t know is that they are telling the truth out loud speaking it but they are really lying in their heads which ,makes us question the title and the smart way the film director plays around with the film.

Four Brothers  (2005)

Genre: Action Crime Drama

Director: John singleton is the man responsible for his most famous film boys in the hood where he showed what exactly what was going on in new York at the time which really brought people to a Holt  as they felt that this film really did explain what people were going through in america at those times.The film Four Brothers is a remake up to date version of  the 1965 old western film "The sons of Katie elder" where similar things happen in the film "four brothers" as they seek revenge for there mothers death.

Story line

It is about four adopted brothers who come together after a number of years after finding out their mother had been murdered, they then begin to investigate their mother’s death and start to take the law into their own hands. There are two cops one black one white one of the cops are secretly working for the hoodlum and when the other cop realizes that the white cop helped to kill the old lady then he kills his partner and frames his dead partner making it seem he was killed by one of the four brothers, later on the cop is found out and is killed by another officer (good cop) after one of the four brothers found out about the dirty cop and how he killed his partner. Then later on in the story the three brothers then find out one of the brothers are dealing with a notorious local bad guy/gangster which then creates problems.

This film gives you mixed emotions e.g. when the youngest brother dies in a set up shoot out organized by the hoodlum you feel sorry for the other three brothers because in that scene the little brother is in pain slowly dying and screaming for his big brothers help.

Again in that scene it also makes you angry because you know it was the thuugs that set up the whole thing, so it makes you feel angry towards the hoodlum even though you do not see him in that scene but the director gives it to you subliminally that this was the doings of the hoodlum.

I watched this film at home by myself it was recommended by a friend to watch it, and I enjoyed it because I had no idea what it was about.

Even though it is based in London the film company working title has a number of locations from Ireland to Los Angeles .working title are also involved with a number of different productions from film to TV and also plays.

My video genre is going to be GRIME music

I will also have a few people in the video maybe dancing; I will have different camera angles to show different angles of the main person in the video to tell the story of what is going on, I will use eye levels bird’s eye view and worm's eye. I want my video to be a bit like a video I've seen before "rival they said" which has different camera angles and different shots of him when he is rapping also some imagines of him in the recording studio. The location of my video will in playground/park, and will be set in Camden town because there is a lot of people present and it’s a busy area and you get the effect of people walking around minding their own business as the video is taking place. In my video i am going to have a long shot wide shot where you can see my body and see what things are going on in the background at the same time, The sound in the background playing will be the music of my choice that i will make myself, There will be different clips of me in the video and different clips of other people in the video featuring. The setting of the video shoot will be in the day time so you can see what’s going on around the place rather than it being at night and you can’t really see a lot of what is going on because of the lighting. I will also have other artists featuring in the video so you will not only just see my face but other people I get in my music video. in my video we will also be walking around the place to looking at different shops and different places in Camden area and trying to get random people on the camera to maybe say a line in the song to get them more involved in the video.

What is your role?

In my group there are three of us and we will be all doing different roles Ray will be editing the video after it has been done making sure if any mistakes arebeen made we can fix them and make them better and Belinda will be recording the footage that we get, my role is to interview people asking the students in the college what they would like in a relationship and how would they cope in a relationship, also asking them how they would feel in certain situations if things were to happen to them in a relationship and go wrong but we will also be doing different scenes so we will be switching roles rather than just having one person just doing the same role.

Here are lists of different items I will need for my assignment for any sort of back up.

I will need a Video camera to record the footage with me and my group.

I will also basically need a Digital recording media/tape, chip, drive in order for the video interview to actually work properly. 

Me and my group will also be using microphones we are not sure which kind yet but we will need good microphones in order for our interview to sound good.

I will need spare batteries and cable headphones just in case anything were to happen to them or if we run out of batteries for the video we can use new ones to continue our recording.

I will need paper and pens so I can write down the questions being asked in case I forget, i will also need a paper and pen for other things to maybe write down notes and also to plan the pole in what most people have said then I have a rough idea in what I will need to transfer from the paper to maybe the computer.

We will need a computer to tally things out at the end of the pole to see how many people have said the same thing and how many people have chosen to say another. Also we will need the computer to do some editing for our presentation to be more professional and entertaining putting music and colour into it.

I will need a place to locate where I will be asking the questions with my group and we have chosen the third floor in college at lunch time where the college is most at its busiest, we chose this time because we found out we can catch a lot of people at this hour and most people are willing to take part in the questions rather than doing it in the morning were people are not really responsive or after college were everyone is tired and just wants to go home.

The history of editing films started off with edwin porter,edwin discussed that cutting different shots together created motions that influenced the customers,this was called inter cutting which shows different scenes happening at the same time e.g. have a scene of a fire where the building is burning ,then shows a clip of the woman inside the burning building next goes to the clip of the fire team getting ready to save the woman down at the station,this leaves us the audience worried about what is going to happen to the woman and makes us want the fire team to save this woman.

Editing now days can be slown down or increased speed this is sometimes to startle the audience.


DW Grifice 


He was the first film editor to really understand editing to take filming to another level.
he was also the first to use a closeup shot ,which people/producers didn't really agree with at first but it later then advanced and turned into a big thing later on in hollywood, Grifice also created the flash backs to create an illusion that the charter is thinking about something that happened in the past,he would also use a wideshot to a close up to make the audience not beware that they were actually watching a film,Grifice had a main cutter called edward smith who helped him edit he then later on brought his wife who began to also help the both of them in the world of editing.

This video is for entertainment as it is 13:43 long and has strange and interesting theme to as you can see its got choreography dancing which makes it ,ore exciting and interesting to people watching this video.

There is a parody of thriller on you tube where people make fun of it e.g. Lenny Henry made a thriller parody and changed the words to make it funny ,he had a twist in the parody where from turning into a wolf being his original form then turning into a human which causes the girl to run away from him.

This video has a story but a meaning to it as well saying that you can look past what people say and think about you all you have to do is believe in your self ,this is a more slow calm and mellow and its meant to inspire people to do what they felt like they couldn't do before.

This song has space jam (movie) in it as R Kelly is singing this s also in a way advertising the film as it was out in 1996 and R Kelly featuring in the sound track ,so this is promotion for the film and R kelly's CD ,also Michael Jordan is in the film which is promoting the NBA and NBL ,theses are sports he's played in and this is to influence children when watching the film.

The task was to explain a story which people will understand with out using final cut pro to see how good the video would turn out to be, to make this video we had to pause stop and record.
We used a range of shots to explain the story we used close ups face to face ,extreme close up ,over the shoulder shot to show when the person was moving and when the person was talking, we also used point of view .i feel that the areas that need improving are the sound because it was too noisy where we shot the video ,also we needed it to speak a bit louder because you cant really hear what the people are saying in the video.
if i could edit i would improve the back round noise also i would add some music to make it sound a bit more better and entertaining because music really explains the story more better and gives you a good drama scene.

This is music that the character cant hear in the film, only the viewer can hear the music this creates the scene of what is going on it can be jolly or dramatic.

We know this because the director zooms in into the ring showing us that she was looking at the ring, this could have been shown by showing the girl picking up the ring but it was shown differently by showing her hand.

This shows that the man is talking to everyone on the table and it sets out the place where the clips taking place and shows the status of the people around.

• What is Shot-Reverse-Shot?

Going back and forth with both characters showing that they are having convocation even though you do not seen them in the same shot

Is zooming on the shot to make the convocation look more convincing to make it look like the charters having a eye-to-eye conversation.

To show that he is not talking to just one person and to show that he is talking to everyone of the group. to see the others reactions to the plan

"This was an outstanding video, i personally think that if the quality of the footage was at a better standard; for example- his face wasn't as clear as it viewed on the camera itself. Maybe a change of software? The video would be on point no doubt about it. To further add the music slightly over-powered the audio itself at times, so sometimes it was had to hear at times. so maybe a slight change in the music sound level? But other than the video was BANGING!!"

"I found the video to be brilliant, the camera was clear and they're use of angle was effective because it suited his purpose. However they could of been an improved on the quality of the footage because in some of the scenes the image was not clear enough, but i was still able to see alex faces. they were a few things you can improved on sound, because in one of the scenes the police sirens had passed through so i was unable to hear what he had been trying say, i was trying to understand what he was saying through the background. My summary of the video

Overall I feel my video was very good I feel that I had worked it to the best of my ability.

I also feel that the special effects were good and that i made sure that the subtitles were clear; I made sure that i made the video long enough to understand me and where i am from and did different camera shots for people to feel more involved in my video and show different angles of where i am speaking from.

I maybe should have put a better lighting on the camera so you can see what is going on more. Also the audio maybe needs to be turned up more so you can hear more of what I was saying in the video, I also thought i should have chose a quieter place to shoot my scenes.

But overall i feel like i have done a good job editing and planning my video diary about myself and felt that i have explained most of the things in my script to the fullest.

Hey everyone my name is Alex my full name is Alex Denzil Johnson Cole ,but most times my friends and family call me Lexi or Lex because they are to lazy to say my real name but still love them all. Lexi is a baby name my mum gave me when i was young and it is still used up today even though i've grown up and maybe out grown the name.I'am studying in City of westminister College.
I have only one brother he's 21 years old and we lots of fights even though he's older than me he should know better ,but he's family so he's going to be around for a while so i have to deal with it*sighs*

I love to listen to music mostly grime music and i hope to one day get on a big platform and perform to people as i really like to show my talent. Review Reprt

On week one i made myself set up a blogging network for myself so later on i could then introduce my video profile. then i did my introduction to my video and started planing out my script and story boards.

 i have completed this and met my target for my work to be fully completed, i made sure when i got home i did all the work in class saving it and taking it on my USB.

i have learnt that if i put more effort into my work then i can get a good grade i also learned that i can indeed edit videos and create them and they will get better as i keep doing them, my methods of this was asking for help then doing it my self and i enjoyed learning how to make the video its self.

in future i will try to take more things in rather than taking things in one by one so the whole process is much easier to tackle with.

on week two my target was too learn how to use the equipment camera and also disguising existing video profiles and adding more to my script and planning made sure i succeeded  in that and completed that and met that target have learnt that i am good with the camera and i know how to opp-orate the camera with the learning activity's we had done with the camera have found out that i am more motivated by actually competing against my class mates in my learning because it makes everything more  exciting in the work because you want to see how other videos will turn out.in the future i will again put my had up more if i don't understand things about the camera rather than just pressing the buttons on the camera.

on week three my target was to start filming properly and review my footage that i had shot,i felt like i had done that with every camera shot of my video and analysed what had needed to be changed and what i wanted to add so i re did some of my scenes to help my video be a success,i have learnt that in this type of task that my learning was good and that i can have a more of an understanding in what i am doing in my video analyzing have learnt that i am motivated by sitting down with my teacher and discussing what part of my film is good and what parts i may have to change, so i enjoyed the good and bad feedback, what frustrates me was sometimes i wasn't quit sure if my ideas would go out to plan and if i could carry them out. in future i will  try to listen to more advice for me to make my video good and  for me to also be an effective learner.

on week four my target was to edit my video more and complete work for my assessment achieved this by using he Mac and finally putting all my shots together also adding music and other special effects to make my video more interesting to my people’s have learnt that i have developed a skill as i went on for editing although i still feel it wasn't as good as others but then i got use to the software i was using. what motivates me as a learner is again competition with other peoples videos in the class and how they are editing there own video and how good mine has to be, this makes it challenging for me and i really enjoy it. what frustrates ne is sometimes when the editing is not going as well as you thought it was when you see other peoples editing. In future i will try to make my editing more cleaner and try and advance my skills in it more.

There are different types of formats for videos like MP4 which allows you to watch videos
on any device lets say i phone ,you can watch it in HD which also helps the video look better and makes the quality look nice.

3G is another video format and is good to watch videos on,it is also very clear a bit like Mp4 but not as good ,however there is an advanced upgrade to 3G and that is 4G which is faster and again like HD make the quality better



Streaming:

This is an audio and video use and you use it on the internet basically live and online.if you listen to something online or watch a video online then this is called streaming because it is not being viewed or listened on television.some streaming sites you will have to pay for in order for you to watch them or listen to what ever ,other websites are free of charge so you can watch any live sport that is taking place that day.



File Compression:

is a reduced size of data in order for you to save space or any sort of transmission this can be done by just the data content or it can be done on a transmission, but his depends on the factors.like if you want to maybe save a video on to your computer or laptop and you dont have space because the MB takes up to much space ,you could put it in a file compression and this will reduces the size of the MB in order for you to download or watch.





Aspect Ratios: 4:3, 16:9 is basically to do with images and cameras,its mainly to do with cropping and editing pictures and videos the 16:9 camera makes the image look bigger so e.g. if you are shooting a film you can see your whole picture or film bigger than the 4:3 because the 4:3 may not get everything inside the video shot because it is not big enough where as the 16:9 can more time fit your whole body in the shot.

i would say that it is targeted for kids in order for them to be with their parents in the local shops and get that specific cereal for them.This as made advert was made in 2012,over the years Kellogg s have introduced co co pops for kids and with the same animated face that they are familiar with. it is also a breakfast cereal that can be aimed for ages up to 4-17 as alot of people young do eat this cereal.
the editing of the advert was around £23,000 as the video has alot of special effects and 4D like animation.

Hey everyone my name is Alex my full name is Alex Denzil Johnson Cole ,but most times my friends and family call me Lexi or Lex because they are to lazy to say my real name but still love them all. Lexi is a baby name my mum gave me when i was young and it is still used up today even though i've grown up and maybe out grown the name.



i have only one brother he's 21 years old and we lots of fights even though he's older than me he should know better ,but he's family so he's going to be around for a while so i have to deal with it*sighs*

i love to listen to music mostly grime music and i hope to one day get on a big platform and perform to people as i really like to show my talent. I will structure my idea plans very well and I shall make sure every piece of work I do not complete is then completed. I shall do at least an hour of work to make sure my work is fully completed to the best of my ability. If I am stuck on my work then I will go to my tutor or any of my teachers taht work in the department and will ask for help if the task is difficult. Also, i'll structure my timetable to keep myself on track with work, sleep and timing. If I am ill or away for any reason I will also take the time to talk to my buddy for any other work I have to do or have missed out on in order for me to catch up, or if my buddy is away then I will help he or she out on their work and give them the necessary items e.g. sheets/documents to help them in our work. i will take it upon myself to get a diary so I can record things that i need or any targets my form tutor of teacher gives me, so I know what I need to focus on and so I can improve on my learning in college; If I am in need of any help or advice then i can go to student support care and they can talk to me and give me good advice.

There are a lot of useful resources available in the college for me like ,the gym ,this can help me in a lot of ways ,i wouldn't have to go to a gym and pay a lot of money where as in city of Westminster i can go to the gym and pay once a year which is not a lot at all considering how much other gyms costs, there is also a dance studio where you can dance if you have a passion for dancing and you need to practice which is always good and it is open to all members of the college. also we have a canteen where if you feel you do not need to come out of college to go to the shops you can always go to the canteen and get lunch which is easier than going out of college. The college also has a games area for break time and lunch time where you can hang out with friends and you can interact with other students you have not met them yet it’s a good way of making new friends.
